题目:Some people believe that job satisfaction is more important than job security. Others believe that people cannot always enjoy their jobs and that a permanent job is more important. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
It is true that seeking for a decent job is not as easy as decades ago due to the economic recession and competitive job market. Although some may argue that a sense of satisfaction towards their jobs is crucial, personally, I believe that a permanent job is more meaningful.
On the one hand, a permanent job can guarantee to meet employee’s basic needs. This is because almost no one can escape from the reality. Everyday, we are facing with a variety of expenses, such as food, shelter, transport, bill and even education tuition for children. With a relatively stable job, people, especially those in middle aged can cover most expenses. In addition, those who stay in the same company or institute are more likely to get a promotion as they show the loyalty towards their company. However, those who change their jobs frequently may meet unintended outcomes. For example, they may find difficult to support themselves and raise their family members.
On the other hand, those advocates for pursuing a job they love might regard job satisfaction as the priority when finding an employment. They believe only working with friendly colleagues and employers and under a flexible working time schedule, can they fulfill their potential and accomplish all tasks well. However, this idea is unrealistic. For example, dozens of young graduateshave the bitter result because of their immature thought, that is unemployment.
In my opinion, there is no perfect job in the world. The only thing we can do is to find a suitable job rather than a perfect one. There is a 10,000 hours theory in psychology thatpeople who devotethemselves to jobs and spend more than 10,000 hours constantly can become experts in that field. This theory tells us a plain fact that no one can achieve a sense of job satisfaction without years of efforts and persistence.
In conclusion, people having a constant job are more likely to have a promising job career and wellbeing.

The graph below shows the amounts of waste produced by three companies over a period of 15 years.
The line graph compares three companies in terms of their waste output between the years 2023 and 2023.
It is clear that there were significant changes in the amounts of waste produced by all three companies shown on the graph. While companies A and B saw waste output fall over the 15-year period, the amount of waste produced by company C increased considerably.
In 2023, company A produced 12 tonnes of waste, while companies B and C produced around 8 tonnes and 4 tonnes of waste material respectively. Over the following 5 years, the waste output of companies B and C rose by around 2 tonnes, but the figure for company A fell by approximately 1 tonne.
From 2023 to 2023, company A cut waste production by roughly 3 tonnes, and company B reduced its waste by around 7 tonnes. By contrast, company C saw an increase in waste production of approximately 4 tonnes over the same 10-year period.
It is not necessary to travel to other places to learn about the other culture. We can learn as much as from books, films and internet. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In recent years, people have been interested in making a long journey to some unfamiliar cities which are far from their hometown. One of their tourism purposes is mainly to experience the local culture and learn the traditions. However, someone doubts that people can obtain culture-related information through books, films and internet instead of travel. I disagree on this view to a certain degree, although books, films and internet are useful resources for providing valuable cultural information.
It is a time-saving way to search comprehensive cultural information concerning tourism destinations by using books and the internet. Many published travel guide books have summarized helpful strategies and explored cultural landscape in detail for tourists like Lonely Planet and National Geographic. People nowadays also tend to record their journey on some online travel websites such as Trip Advisor, which offer a convenient platform for worldwide travelers to share their own cultural experiences. Also, general public may not get an insight into local customs and traditions when they are traveling, due to some objective limiting factors like holiday length, tourism budget and language barrier.
As primary travelling information sources, books, films and internet all have their obvious drawbacks. Travel records on travel notes may have been out of date when tourists are reading them as everything is changing in a country in the age of globalization, including cultural sector. For example, Spanish women have no longer used a fan as a kind of body language. Besides, information from films and internet seems to show a lack of reliability. Film is a kind of art which is exaggerated and dramatic in the respect of content description. On the internet, every net user can express their opinions to a same cultural phenomenon or traditional event so that the word-of mouth is not authoritative and objective to a high degree.
To summarise, relying on books, films and the internet to obtain cultural information is not enough because lacks trust and authority, even though these resources are sufficient and accessible. The combination of travel and knowledge (from books, films and internet) would be the best choice.

Task:Some people think governments should focus on reducing environmental pollution and housing problems to help people prevent illness and disease. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample answer:
There is no doubt that peoples health will be influenced directly or indirectly by the environment and housing condition. Whether governments should focus more on the environment and estate has triggered a controversy. I feel that individuals should take more responsibility for their well-being other than governments increasing attention.
Indeed, the environmental problems and housing conditions are two main sources for illness and diseases. In many large cities in northern China, haze weather has become a daily killer, especially causing respiratory diseases in winter. Also, populace will easily access to viruses and bacteria if they live in a poor housing condition without any advanced sanitation. Therefore, governments should give more attention and higher investment in these two areas.
Compared to individuals, governments have more power to arrange a wide range of social resources to address severe issues; however, it does not mean that addressing this problem totally depends on governments. The state is an organizer or a coordinator in our society instead of a responsibility taker. Although governments can claim people to enhance the awareness of environment protection, make policy to strengthen the environment management and invest estate where they need, public health condition is still a personal problem to some degree. People have the obligation to form and keep a healthy and positive lifestyle, or they will still face the threat of illness and diseases even environment and housing condition getting better.
In conclusion, people can also need to take responsibility of their well-being as governments only hold a position as organizer and coordinator. The most feasible solution may be that governments provide a fine setting on one hand and public should pursue a healthy lifestyle for themselves on the other hand.

题目:When designing a building, the most important factor is inside use of the building rather than its outside appearance. Do you agree or disagree?
Which is more important, function or appearance? This has always been a hot topic for so many years.
As people are becoming more and more practical, they pay great emphasis on functions of things. But when people are satisfied with material life, they have spiritual requirement. And aesthetics is one of their pursuits.
The basic requirement of a building is its inside use. No one buys a house that he cannot live in only to appreciate its appearance.
As I have said, modern people are practical, so we never do things that cannot benefit us. But with the new techniques and advanced tools, up until now, human beings have no problem to construct a building to satisfy our practical use, thus in this sense, on the basis of usefulness, we have a higher requirement of beautifulness.
That’s why our world has become more and more beautiful.
But it also depends on different cases. Buildings used for exhibition should not be the same with those used for residence. Great buildings for exhibitions or used as museums are art works themselves and worthy of our appreciating.
The most famous is Sydney Theatre. Many people visit it for its great beauty rather than enjoying concerts.
If the building is only for us to live in, then there is no necessity to invite a famous architect do design such an elegant house. Such buildings are also out of our purchasing power.
To sum up, the inside use and the appearance are both very important. But it doesn’t mean that we should always give the same weight to the two. It should depend on concrete occasions.

In pursuit of higher academic ambition or better career prospects, a growing number of people study and work abroad instead of staying in their working in own countries avoids their adaption to new environment and costly tuition fee and living cost, I strongly claim that studying or working abroad paves the way for their career prospects and develops their independence in long run.
Advocates of staying in hometown believe that there is no need to encounter culture shock and sticking to culture they have immersed and familiar language is easy for them to adapt to college life and working environment. Another merit of the proximity to students’ hometown can always keep the homesickness away and familiar surrounding guarantees a sense of security and belongings, with a positive attitude promoting their academic output. More importantly, staying locally might be a good choice for those family who struggle with poverty, because tuition fees and living cost including housing and groceries cost a fortune, which in turn deepens their financial pressure.
However, after-effects of studying abroad are innumerable, high and have lots of benefits for students’ future development. Initially, exposure to a brand-new environment from overseas improves a self-sufficient attitude and helps students an independent lifestyle. When getting educated in a foreign country, they have to stretch their comfort zone and are responsible for cooking, cleaning and paying bills. Independent skills to manage its own finances is also strengthened. Regardless of any abroad program like scholarship, grant or personal source of income, the students get lots of opportunities to maintain and handle their own finances.
What’s more, studying and working abroad is a precious opportunity to enlarge their vision and have a in-depth understanding of the institutions typically offer cutting-edge knowledge, hire topmost successful scholars as guest lecturers, and supply good laboratories with world-class facilities which provide a good atmosphere for doing research. Meanwhile, good exposure to multicultural people can change the way they see the world and enhance their tolerance to cultural conflicts, which impacts a good change in their mindset.
In conclusion, it is inevitable that people benefit a lot from studying and working from overseas in long term, and I consider this adventurous experience as a better choice but at the expense of sufficient financial support and staying away from familiar surroundings.

I’m writing in response to the advertisement you placed in Shanghai Daily for the position of overseas mechanical engineer on Mon. .
I would like to apply for this post. I graduated with a Master’s degree in Machine-Building and Electronics Industries in Tsinghua University in 1999 and began my career in Zhongshan ABB Company as a young mechanical engineer. In 20XX, I was promoted to be the chief engineer, taking charge of the projects in Southeast Asia. I have been seeking for chances overseas in my majored domain in the hope that I can develop my potential further.
If possible, I would like to choose a mechanical company with good reputation located in Chicago. I would also prefer small private companies which allow me to enjoy a larger space of promotion.
The reason I made the decision above is that my husband has recently been relocated to Chicago by his company and I am, therefore, seeking a position in the same area in Chicago.
I have enclosed my resume that outlines in detail my qualifications and experience as well as an open letter of recommendation from my former employer.
Please give me a feedback at your earliest convenience if my qualifications meet your requirements.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Introduction (44 words)
It is well known that a museum is a building to display a collection of artistic, historical, cultural or military objects. Undoubtedly museums can have a variety of purposes in the city; I think two roles the museums play can illustrate they are worth visiting.
Body1 (89 words)
Visiting museums is informative. (topic sentence) Once I visited a military museum in Beijing,China, soon I learned that an ancient warrior might have outfought his enemies in combat if he had had great strength while a modern soldier should be armed with sophisticated present soldiers should spend far much time on studying modern technology instead of building up muscles. Likewise, If you visit other museums, you will have a better perception on a certain field, because you can witness some genuine objects which cannot be seen on books.
Body2 ( 65words)
In addition, a museum can function to cultivate one's sense of patriotism.(topic sentence) In china, schools often organize trips to some historical museums. When the students learn that many years ago, a number of countries invaded China robbing treasure and killing Chinese civilians, promptly they will establish a strong sense to defend the nation, revealing that only a strong motherland can give them pride and safety.
Body3 ( 74words)
Now we talk about how to fund a museum. A museum can never be considered as a financial burden to society. I suggest that the Government should invest a small amount of money on advertisements for the museums in the city. For example, ads of the museums should be forwarded on the travel brochures or maps of the city. Consequently tourists come and admission tickets are collected. Both reputation and funds are earned.
Conclusion (23 words)
In brief, museums should play a role as an instructive means of the city and incomes from admission can keep them running properly.

It's generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, are others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
The relative importance of natural talent and training is a frequent topic of discussion when people try to explain different levels of ability in, for example, sport, art or music.
Obviously, education systems are based on the belief that all children can effectively be taught to acquire different skills, including those associated with sport, art or music. So from our own school experience, we can find plenty of evidence to support the view that a child can acquire these skills with continued teaching and guided practice.
However, some people believe that innate talent is what differentiates a person who has been trained to play a sport or an instrument, from those who become good players. In other words, there is more to the skill than to a learned technique, and this extra talent cannot be taught, no matter how good the teacher or how frequent a child practices.
I personally think that some people do have talents that are probably inherited via their genes. Such talents can give individuals a facility for certain skills that allow them to excel, while more hard-wokring students never manage to reach a comparable level. But, as with all questions of nature versus nurture, they are not mutually exclusive. Good musicians or artists and exceptional sports star have probably succeeded because of both good training and natural talent. With the natural talent, continuous training would be neither attractive nor productive, and without the training, the child would not learn how to exploit and develop their talent.
In conclusion, I agree that any child can be taught particular skills, but to be really good in areas such as music, art or sport, then some natural talent is required.

Happiness is considered very important in life.
Why is it difficult to define? What factors are important in achieving happiness? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. (2023
Happiness is very difficult to define, because it means so many different things to different people. While some people link happiness to wealth and material success, others think it lies in emotions and loving personal relationships. Yet others think that spiritual paths, rather than either the material world or relationships with people, are the only way to true happiness.
Because people interpret happiness for themselves in so many different ways, it is difficult to give any definition that is true for everyone. however, if there are different kinds of happiness for different individuals then the first step in achieving it would be to have a degree of self-knowledge. A person needs to know who he or she is before being able to know what it is that makes him or her happy.
Of course, factors such as loving relationships, good health, the skills to earn a living and a peaceful environment all contribute to our happiness too. But this does not mean that people without these conditions cannot be happy.
Overall, I think an ability to keep clear perspectives in life is a more essential factor in achieving happiness. By that I mean an ability to have a clear sense of what is important in our lives (the welfare of our families, the quality of our relationships, making other people happy, etc.) and what is not ( a problem at work, getting annoyed about trivial things, etc.).
Life self-awareness, this is also very difficult to achieve, but I think these two factors that may be most important for achieving happiness.

It's more important for school children to learn about their local history than world history. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some people argue that it is more significant for school children to study local history rather than international history. As far as I am concerned, I disagree with this view. I think they hold equal value, and thus we should attach equal importance to them.
As a result of constant media attention, sports professionals in my country have become stars and celebrities, and those at the top are paid huge salaries. Just like movie stars, they live with huge houses and cars.
Many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those of top surgeons or research scientists, or even leading politicians who have the responsibilityof governing the country. However, sports salaries are not determined by considering the contribution to society a person makes, or the level of responsibility he or she holds. Instead, they reflect the public popularity of sport in general and the level of public support that successful stars can generate. So the notion of ‘fairness’ is not the issue.
Those who feel that sports stars’ salaries are justified might argue that the number of professionals with real talent are very few, and the money is a recognition of the skills and dedication a person needs to be successful. Competition is constant and a player is tested every time they perform. in their relatively short career. The pressure from the media is intense and there is little privacy out of the spotlight. So all of thesefactors may justify the huge earnings.
Personally, I think that the amount of money such sports stars make is more justified than the huge earnings of movie stars, but at the same time, it indicatesthat our society places more value on sport than on more essential professions and achievements.

the spiritual backbone of a nation
build a sense of responsibility
develop a strong sense of cultural identity
On the other hand, the knowledge of international history is also vital for students. In this globalised age, people have witnessed an ever-increasing exchange of cultures between countries. The best way to be aware of the cultures of different countries is to learn about their history. By studying international history, students can get to know people in various countries, what they believe in, how they lead their daily life, and their traditions and customs. What’s more, students can absorb novel things from international history. Therefore, students will become inclusive because they have learned cultural differences and accepted the diversity of the world. International history broadens their mind.

题目:Some people regard video games as harmless fun, or even as a useful educational tool. Others, however, believe that videos games are having an adverse effect on the people who play them. In your opinion, do the drawbacks of video games outweigh the benefits?
范文:
Many people, and children in particular, enjoy playing computer games. While I accept that these games can sometimes have a positive effect on the user, I believe that they are more likely to have a harmful impact.
On the one hand, video games can be both entertaining and educational. Users, or gamers, are transported into virtual worlds which are often more exciting and engaging than real-life pastimes. From an educational perspective, these games encourage imagination and creativity, as well as concentration, logical thinking and problem solving, all of which are useful skills outside the gaming context. Furthermore, it has been shown that computer simulation games can improve users’ motor skills and help to prepare them for real-world tasks, such as flying a plane.
However, I would argue that these benefits are outweighed by the drawbacks. Gaming can be highly addictive because users are constantly given scores, new targets and frequent rewards to keep them playing. Many children now spend hours each day trying to progress through the levels of a game or to get a higher score than their friends. This type of addiction can have effects ranging from lack of sleep to problems at school, when homework is sacrificed for a few more hours on the computer or console. The rise in obesity in recent years has also been linked in part to the sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise that often accompany gaming addiction.
In conclusion, it seems to me that the potential dangers of video games are more significant than the possible benefits.

Traffic congestion and pollution caused by an increasing number of vehicles have long been pressing problems in modern society, which have frustrated and exhausted governments all over the there is a popular opinion that raising the fuel price is the best solution to solve these two problems,I would say that there is no panacea to cure all the ills while other options are available too.
Granted,a higher price of petrol might help constrain the usage of private cars, thus reducing emissions to some an approach does not work with other vehicles, like buses and long distance coaches, which will not be inhibited by the price of a consequence, instead of the improvement in air quality, what is ensued will be an increasing expenditure in traffic.
From this consideration, multiple measures are definitely what we need to tackle the congestion and first solution that comes to my mind is building the subway by energy and running underground, the subway seems to be a good alternative to its fuel-powered counterparts on the road.
Also, for those who do not have easy access to subway stations, the bicycle should have its role to play for these people, another eco-friendly transport which neither emit waste fumes nor cause traffic jams.
From what has been discussed above, helpful though it is,increasing the price of petrol does not seems to be a silver bullet to curb the traffic and pollution would say, alternatively, the construction of subway system and the promotion of bicycles should play their parts in tackling these issues.
